*9 months old* (already?)

January 26, 2010

Everyday I look at my little girl, I can’t believe how fast she is growing up.  During Ben’s first year all I wanted was for him to sit up on his own, eat “real” food, then walk, then talk….I was always looking for the next big milestone, never really taking the time to enjoy the stage he was in at the time.  Now Chris and I look at our big 3 year old boy and gasp sometimes, how did he get to be such a little boy romping around ,talking in full sentances and doing his thing?  He is definitely our parenting challenge I tell ya!  God is teaching me patience!

Well….when Mia was born I vowed to just enjoy every stage she went through without rushing to the next, but this little girl seems to WANT to rush!  Once she finally sat up on her own, she didn’t stop, crawling, pulling up to standing, cruising, and now even some ‘bambi’ steps on her own, and I am thinking SLOW down little one, slow down!  (side note: as least she’s not talking yet besides the occasional “dadda”!)

I love having little ones, and to see them grown and change and develop is such a blessing, but a little sad at the same time…I am sure other Mommy’s can relate to that feeling.  I guess that’s why I take so many photos of my kids, I want to remember everything!!  I know and realize just how fast it really does pass you by, and I know people think I am crazy for the amount of photos I take of my kids (believe me I have got comments!) but when it comes down to it, I don’t think I will ever regret having so many wonderful photo’s to look back on!  Here are some of Mia’s 9 month shots…I bought this hat months ago with a ‘winter’ photo shoot in mind…

I will continue to take photos of my kids as they grow, and share them, because it packs together two of my favorite things, my kids and photography…..what could be a better hobby?!  And you know  I am here to help capture photo’s of YOUR kids/families too, just give me a shout at shelleysomers@gmail.com  I am already booking photo sessions for the spring/summer 2010!  I am also excited and blessed to announce that come spring we will [hopefully and Lord willing}  have a little “shelley k” studio right in my house!!  I can’t WAIT!

*in memory of my dear aunt*

January 19, 2010

Just to warn you…this is less of a photography post, and more of a writing post…..last week our family lost our Great Aunt Dodie, my Mom’s Aunt, and my Nanny’s dear sister.  Usually when someone says their “great aunt” passed away, you think…oh some little old lady that no one was very close to.  In this situation, it was much different, my Great Aunt Dodie was a Grandmother to me in more ways then I can count!  The morning after I found out she had passed away, I wrote this for her…not because I wanted to read it at her funeral (not much of a public speaker) but because I wanted to write something for her that would do her justice, that would show how special she really was to us and to so many.  She will be dearly missed in many ways, but we are so very happy and thankful that she is walking on the streets of gold with her saviour.

DSC_9870 {flowers from her memorial, all the girls were given some to take home…Dodie loved pink, one of the many things we had in common}

In Memory….. Geraldine Alberta Thompson {1916-2010}

As a small girl, I remember going up the elevator to the almost very top of a tall apartment building to visit with my Great Aunt Dodie.  My sister and I would spend the weekend there quite frequently, and we always looked forward to it.  I remember that elevator door opening and looking to the right, and there she was standing at her door waiting for us with a big smile, and usually her apron on.  We would run full speed into her arms and giver her a big hug and wave good bye to our Mom or Dad never looking back.  Her house always smelled like delicious homemade food, because there was always something cooking at Dodie’s.  Our weekends were usually spent playing with Dodie’s clothes and scarves, she always let us play dress up and dance around her apartment with music playing from a record.  Dodie would read to us, let us do crafts, take us swimming at the pool, and there was always the essential McDonalds lunch and dollar store excursion.  I think she secretly liked those McDonald’s lunch’s more then us!  She would always give us exact change for two items at the dollar store, $2.30.  I remember the time that Lisa and I decided we wanted to get something for Dodie at the dollar store instead of for ourselves, and she had that little teddy bear sitting in her room right up until the end.  She appreciated the small things.  I remember funny things about her apartment like that fact that she froze her milk bags, and always had 6.80 news playing while she cooked, her pink frilly shower curtain and pink soap in her guest bathroom, her bible sitting on her bed stand… What I remember most though is her patience with us kids.  She always had that calm patience with us and never ever raised her voice.  She had a way of teaching us and calming us with her words.  Her many years of teaching must have helped her blossom in this gift.  She even spent time tutoring me in math when I wad having lot’s of trouble with it  in school.  She was always invested in us, always willing to help us, and always wanting to keep us on the right track.

If we weren’t at Dodie’s apartment she was helping out at our house, Mom worked part time evenings so Dodie would come by at least one night a week to give us dinner and put us kids  to bed until Mom or Dad got home.  She was always so very loving, but always made sure we stuck to the rules, it was the principal in her!  She always made sure we ate well, got our homework done and got to bed on time.  Mom appreciated her help so much, I am sure she never thought twice that we were in the best possible care when Dodie was watching us.  We would sit around and talk,  Dodie always wanted me to get into figure skating, every time she saw me she tried to talk me out of Ballet and into skating, sadly it didn’t work, but she sure tried!  She took us on a trip to Halifax when I was about 12 years old, and endured Lisa and I bickering in the backseat of the car during the whole entire Cabot trail, let’s just say she did turn her hearing aid off for a while on that trip.  I so appreciated that trip, and look back on it, and the photos fondly.  She wanted to show us where she grew up, and it was something I will always remember.

Dodie was an amazing example of modesty and beauty, her hair was always pinned up into a perfect french roll, even on a Saturday at home she would put on her tights and skirt, earrings and a little make up, she always looked top notch and put together, and she was put together inside too.  She was an amazing example of an unwavering Follower of God, and she always encouraged us to do the same.  Her love for God shined through her eyes to others, She kept it no secret who her Lord and Saviour was.  “My Daily Bread” was always seen next to her bible on the bed stand and was passed to my Mom after she was finished going through it.   Looking back I am so thankful for that wonderful example of a Godly woman in my life, she even encouraged me over and over to follow in the waters of baptism, because she knew it was what God wanted for me.  She never wavered, never gave up, and never fell away, and there is much to be said for that in this day in age.  Even when she found the man she loved, and he wasn’t a follower of Christ, she wouldn’t marry him, and stayed single for her entire lifetime, because she was obeying God and his commands.  She will have many jewels on her crown, and her example will always live on in my heart, my siblings and cousin’s hearts and all the children she taught over her lifetime.  Lastly I will remember her laugh, her infectious hollering laugh that she couldn’t stop once started.  I can still see her now smiling and laughing.  I will always strive to be as patient with my children as you were with us, Thank you Dodie for the influence you were and are in our lives, you will always live on in the many things you have taught us, and of course every time I eat a slice of cherry pie, or smell homemade macaroni and cheese bubbling in the oven I will ALWAYS think of you.

Much Love, Shelley

Matthew 11:25-30 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you asthe world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

***As a side note, some interesting things I was reminded of again at her memorial service….her first job was as a teacher in a one room school house in Nova Scotia (a real live Anne, or Christy!)  She rented a place to teach the students from her school bible stories, she paid to rent it out of her own money because she wanted those kids to know the Word, and she wasn’t able to do it in public school.  She sent many troubled teens to camp so they could hear the word of God! ***

Baby Travis (10 wks old)

January 11, 2010

I KNEW I was long overdue for a blog post, sometimes I am so set on updating my FB with new photos that I forgot all about my blog, and the blog is very important I know!  And then, I wasn’t sure what to do a post on, I have shoots from  months ago that I never blogged about, but I wanted to do something recent, and close to my heart.  SO this is what I came up with…..Meet Baby Travis James, he is my BFF Barbara’s second little boy, and this is him at 10 weeks old.  We planned to come meet the new little fella MUCH earlier, but with colds, and fevers and then the holidays it has taken until last week for us to finally make the drive and do it.  Travis is a sweet, smiley and pudgy little guy, He is already the same weight as Mia who is 8 mos old!!  I enjoyed holding him, and having him fall asleep on my shoulder to give his Mommy a little break, and of course I had to take some photo’s of the little man!  I wanted to show these photo’s because even though I don’t have a studio or any equipment really (praying one day that will come!)  That I can still get some special shots right inside someone’s home, with just me my D60, 35mm lens, and natural light!  I love the look of natural light photos, especially with baby photos, which is good cause that’s what I will be working with until I can get a rich person to be my friend (do you know of anyone??) hehe…

I know she is always there for me, and we can always pick up right where we left off!  I hope you can enjoy these photo’s of your precious little Travis for years to come!  And now I hear my own little munchkin waking up!  Here I go!

My Baby *G*

November 9, 2009

WOW, I havn’t blogged in ages!  For good reason though, working and photo sessions and life as a Mama have been keeping me busy, I am a Starbucks working, photo taking, nose wiping Mama!  My favorite part believe it or not is the nose wiping :) beats making latte’s anyday!   So I have a lot of blog posts to catch up on, but for now while I work on some, time for a little Mommy bragging :)

Here is my Mia, she is 6 months old now, yikes time flies!  I take specific photos of her every month, and for her 6 month shots I decided to take out a little outfit that I have had for ages.  She fits it finally, it’s pink, and I thought it was perfect for some cozy fall photos.

Little munchkin!  I want to remember her just like this when she is all grown.  Her deep dark eyes, and chubb cheeks!

Lindsay & Geoff *together again*

September 28, 2009

I would have to say, there is something special about engagement shoots, they seem to be my favorite.  I love to try and capture the love and emotion between a couple who is waiting to be hitched!  This is Lindsay and Geoff, an amazing couple who have already endured much in their relationship.  Geoff was stationed in Afghanistan for 7 months right after they were engaged, now he is back and they are enjoying planning their big day together.  Here are my favorite photo’s from the shoot, hard to choose just a few because there are so many that I love!

*engaged* [fresh love]

September 22, 2009

SO this past weekend my little sister got ENGAGED!!  I have known about it for quite some time, and have had to keep it secret for almost 6 WEEKS!  That may not seem like very much time in the grand scheme of things, but this is my sister we are talking about, we talk about everything, even things we aren’t supposed to talk about, so this was quite the “biggie” for me to keep in for that long.  I did it though!  I am so happy for my sister that she found “the one”, they balance each other out so well, and make a very special couple.

I was even asked to be her “MOH” (maid of honor) which I am quite thrilled about, she was my maid of honor at my wedding when she was only 16 years old!  Only thing is I am already dreading that time during the reception where I’ll have to make a “speech” and not just any speech, it has to be good!  I am a horrible public speaker, and I get all out of breath and red splotchy face when I have to do stuff like that, but I will definitely do it for my little sis!

Thankfully the day of the engagement we are all able to be there after he popped the big question to celebrate.  We enjoyed a wonderful backyard BBQ on my sister’s fiancee’s gorgeous property.  I took some special pictures so they can remember that important life changing day, and I hope they will cherish them forever.  Here are some of my faves.

Meet Joshua William Scott, 3 weeks old and doing just fine!  Here are my favorite pictures from the shoot with baby Josh, a sweet baby boy to add to a beautiful family.  He was such a good little boy for the shoot, even though he was naked and cold, and we kept taking his soother out!

*mommy & daughter*

September 12, 2009

I’ll start this post by saying I LOVE my little boy, he is such an adventure everyday, and his spunk really keeps me on my toes!  But it wasn’t until I had my daughter Mia that I realized the special bond a mother and daughter share.  When I look into her dark eyes I know that there is something deep that we share, and though I enjoy this time in her life as an infant taking care of her, and nurturing her, I also look forward to those days when she will be able to talk to me, I like to imagine the kinds of things she is going to have on her mind!

Our friend Lauren (who has not one but TWO boys!) thought it would be nice to have some special pictures of just her and her 5 month old daughter Naomi.  I thought it was a perfect idea, and it got me thinking I would love to do a little photo shoot like that with Mia and I too (gotta convince my hubs to do it!)  Here are some sweet shots from the photo shoot :

*my sister, my other half*

September 10, 2009

This is Lisa Nicole Estelle, *my sister*.  She is a gorgeous, caring, talented, intelligent and sassy young lady, and I love to call her my little sis.  There is a five year age difference between us, but I never really notice it much…we’ve spent our lives doing everything together, from playing “Barbies” for full 48 hour periods at a time, to staying up WAY past bed time in our shared bedroom to play silly games such as “what would you do?”.  She recently returned from a 6 week medical trip to Kenya, Africa (I sadly still haven’t seen all her pictures yet!) and the week after she returned before she goes back to nursing school we decided to do this fun shoot together, “trash the prom dress” what could be more fun?!  It turned out to be VERY fun, and a week later she says she still feels like a princess!  Here are my favorite pictures from the fun photo shoot!  Can I just say that I have one gorgeous and fabulous sister?!  You’d never know she’s not a model, and that it was difficult at times to get her to co-operate with me! (just teasing, a big sister’s gotta do it!)

September 9, 2009

Scott and Tara are an amazing couple, so kind, giving and down to earth!  We love to call them our good friends, and Ben loves to call their daughter Leah his BFF!  Tara and I went to highschool together, and then reconnected when we were both pregnant with our first children (due only a few wks apart)  She has always been there for me to talk to about anything, and I for her, I am always very thankful for her friendship!  They had a baby boy just a few short weeks ago (we swapped genders this time around!)  and I did some family/belly pics for her about 2 months ago.  Here are some of my favorites from the shoot!

“Mary Beth & Adam” *sweethearts*

September 7, 2009

Mary Beth was my very best friend all through highschool, we went to different highschools but the same church youth group, and we spent hours upon hours talking on the phone every single night before bed (unless I was gorunded, lol)  Mary Beth has always been my sweetest friend, always there when I needed her with kind words and a warm heart, also the BEST shopping buddy!

She met Adam quite a few years ago, and I could tell right from the beginning that he would be the one!  They are due to get married March 2010, and let me tell you it’s going to be the most gorgeous wedding you’ve ever seen!  Here are some faves from their engagement shots I did just a few weeks ago, they are definitely eachother’s “sweethearts” and I wish them all the happiness in the world! Leanne & Kevin *true love*

September 6, 2009

I grew up with Leanne, we’ve known eachother ever since we were teeny babies (our Mom’s are BFF’s) we spent many sleep over weekends, and weeks at the cottage  together, and have a million funny/embarassing stories about eachother.  She has always been such a funny, sweet and caring girl, and I knew that one day some guy would have a prize in her.  That’s where Kevin comes in!  Leanne and Kevin are such a sweet couple, when he looks in to her eyes you KNOW they are in love, he treats her like his princess (that’s the way it’s supposed to be!) and I had a blast doing their engagement photo’s last summer.  They were so easy to get great pictures from, because their love just beamed into the camera!  Here are some of my fave’s from the shoot!

boy + girl

August 31, 2009

When I had my son Ben in Dec’06 nothing could have prepared me for how much I instantly loved him, I felt SO special to have a little boy to start off our family and to be the “big bro” one day.  My whole second pregnancy we had no clue what we were having, we wanted to leave the gender a surprise again.   I kept telling myself it would be a boy, and I even had a great boy named picked out, I was convinced little “Joel Issac” would be part of our family in no time, two little boys running around.

When I was in labour and being admitted to the hospital the nurse said to me “This is a girl, I can tell…and I am always right!” She sounded pretty convinced, I still wasn’t convinced myself, but it was fun to think in the back of my mind, maybe we really could be having a girl?!  The second she was born my hubby looked down at me and said “It’s a girl!” I asked him to repeat it!  I was so surprised, but at the same time not surprised.  Looking back I kinda knew  in my heart all along we were having a girl, and it was pretty fun to prove everyone wrong! (EVERYone and their brother thought we were having another boy, except for Chris who had always said 56% he thought we were having a girl)

The bond I have with my baby girl at her mere 4 months old is so strong, I am so thankful for her, and she amazes me everyday, with her beautiful smile, dark eyes that seem to stare into your soul, and sweet little girly coos that fill my house with that little bit of extra sunshine.   God has blessed us with two beautiful children, and sometimes when I look at them I can’t quite believe they were given to me by God’s loving hands.  My little boy full of life and spunk,  and my baby girl who makes my heart melt into a puddle…life with our Mia Grace Estelle is just wonderful, and we couldn’t picture it anyother way!  As for Ben…he is now the awesome big brother that I had always invisioned him to be, you go little man!

shelley K photography: the introduction

August 31, 2009

DSC_7399

Welcome to my blog!  A place for me to share my pictures with everyone, and the stories that go along with them. I have been wanting to do this for a long time, and I finally decided it was time! I have a passion for photography and even though I may not be the best “technical” photographer, I love the composition of a photo, and the artistic point of view that comes along with taking an amazing picture. You know when you see a picture and it just makes you feel good inside? Those are the ones I strive for! My goal is to keep practicing and learning until I get to a more professional point. Then who knows? The sky is the limit!  I will be posting different photography jobs I have recently done, nature pics, and of course pictures of my family (I can’t help it!) If you are interested in helping me build my portfolio please contact me at shelleysomers@gmail.com, I am currently doing family, engagement, maternity, and children sessions! I like to shoot outdoors as natural light and nature are my inspiration, you choose the spot, or ask me for some suggestions. I am also willing to sell my nature photos as fine art prints, or on canvas (I have a few of my own in my house)  If you are looking for some creative, funky, beautiful, memorable, photos then send me an e-mail, I would LOVE the opportunity to shoot with you!

“Most things in life are moments of pleasure and a lifetime of embarrassment; photography is a moment of embarrassment and a lifetime of pleasure.”  ~Tony Benn
